Looking forward

Exodus 16:3 The Israelites said to them, "If only we had died by the Lord's hand in Egypt! There we sat round pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death." (NIV)

About forty five days after the Israelites made their miraculous exodus from the oppressive hand of Pharaoh in the land of Egypt; it occurred to them that their food supplies were running short.

Moses and Aaron were immediately approached and rebuked for this apparent over sight of theirs. The recent crossing through the Red sea and drowning of the pursuing Egyptian army seemed to do little to uplift the Israelites faith.

All they could see was the lack of food and certain death by starvation. Their thoughts and words expressed their regrets. Why had Moses taken them away from the pots of meat in Egypt?

Its easy to think what an ungrateful lot those people were. But a closer look at our own lives might reveal some frightening similarities.

The Israelites deliverance from Egypt through Moses can be equated to our deliverance from the power of sin and satan by the death and resurrection of Jesus. This was the greatest sacrifice ever offered. Yet we sometimes find ourselves doubting God's readiness to take care of the lesser things in our lives.

The Israelites main problem was not lack of food but lack of faith in the living God.

Faith comes by dwelling on God's word.(Romans 10:17). The Israelites had been through many experiences. Unfortunately experiences in themselves do not increase our faith.

If only the Israelites had taken the time to consider what God had promised them and how He had faithfully fulfilled His promises. Their faith in His ability would have strengthened their hearts and faith.

The same is true of us. Take time to study the promises God gave with regards to His sending Jesus. See how they were fulfilled.

Read his promises about taking care of you. Ponder and meditate on them. Quit looking back at "Egypt". Looking back at Egypt (the world) always makes us worldly and results in walking on the fringes of our Christian faith. This eventually leads to a lack of fulfilment in Christ.

If you are to enjoy your Christian faith instead of enduring it, you will need to go all out for the things of God. Going all out for God will mean spending time in His Word and in prayer.

Quit murmuring over the things God has not done in your life and start mediating on the things He has promised to do in His word. That's how you will grow in faith.
