Godly fear and obedience

The first record of fear we witness in the Bible is found in Genesis 3

Genesis 3:9-11
9 Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?" 10 So he said, "I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself."
NKJV

Fear was a result of sin. Sin had made Adam naked and exposed. When you expose yourself you have cause to fear, because you have made yourself open to an attack.

When we walk under the covering and protection of the Almighty God we have no reason to fear.

Obedience is one of the keys to walking under the covering of God.

In Genesis chapter 6 we see God telling Noah to build an Ark. Noah obeys and hence protects himself and his family. Hebrews records this incidence and throws some light on what motivated Noah to obey God

Hebrews 11:6-7
7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
NKJV

Noah was moved by godly fear. This is a healthy respect for God. Something we could do more with in the church today. Do you respect and honour God enough to obey Him?

Walking in obedience requires us to abide in regular fellowship with Him. It is not only the sins of commission that are wrong but also those of omission. In other words: doing the wrong thing is as bad as not doing the right thing.

God has given us many powerful and precious promises in His Word. If we don't read them we won't know them. This will leave us naked to the attacks of the enemy when he comes along.

In Genesis 9 notice what happened to fear as far as Noah was concerned.

Gen 9:1-3
9:1 So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. 2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, on every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea. They are given into your hand.
NKJV

After the flood was over God put the fear of Noah into the animals. Fear was Noah's protection. Godly fear protects us from the enemy. Noah had power over the animals and a sound mind (peace and comfort) because of his obedience.

God has given us the same promise.

Make a decision to be obedient to God. You will soon discover that the following promise is valid in your life.

2 Tim 1:6-7
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
NKJV
